Klezbarn & Workshop

see Events listing 2004 for dates

'Fraid that this event is a little exclusive - but you might be able to help out here if you know of a larger venue... A largish crew of musicians go and have a couple of klezmer workshops, followed by a big feed, followed by playing music till the wee small hours and an overnight stay.

Numbers are limited so we try and allocate the accommodation for the more capable players, but we welcome non-residents for most of the event. At our first Klezbarn the craic was mighty!

Where is it?

It's a National Trust Base Camp providing basic, but yet sumptuous, accommodation for 20 happy people. The building was converted in 1987 from a large barn built in 1910 in the Stamford vernacular style...

How do I get there?

Best by car. Can be walked from Altrincham station if you like that sort of thing.

Can my pals stay?

Sleeping space is limited (check first), but non-staying guests are welcome (they may need a folding chair). If you have one, a camper van might be good idea. There's no space suitable for tents.

What are the facilities?

There are 2 rooms each with bunks to sleep 8 and one room with bunks to sleep 4. There’s a common room with a wood-burning stove and a large kitchen/dining area with cooker and pots and pans provided. There are 2 washrooms. We hope to bring a keyboard.

What shall I bring?

  • A selection of instruments to play with (valuable seventeenth century ones are favourite, insurance is not provided)
  • Abundant supplies of your favourite poison(s); Hip flask for later, G&T for earlier
  • Fine whines
  • Some food (see below)
  • A sleeping bag and pillow
  • Ear plugs (if you are prone to be kept awake by late night music or snoring)
  • Your choice of restorative for the morning
  • Just in case - some sheet music of any new tunes you have picked up recently (please bring lots of copies).
  • Smiles will be provided upon arrival.

NB The nearest shop and/or takeaway is in New Mills.

What will we eat?

There's space for a big sociable tea.

The idea is for everybody to bring something, and we organise in advance who brings what so that we don't end up with 25 lettuces and a packet of shredded wheat.

Typically, a couple of people bring ready-prepared stews to heat up and others bring salad, tea, coffee and breakfast stuff.

What time is it?

The workshops will be in the afternoon, possibly starting around 14:00. Expect to go to bed very late!

What does it cost?

In the 2003 season, klezbarn was funded by our grant from the Millenium Fund. After this, there will be a collection - £5 / £8 £10 (low / average / solidarity)
