The Folk Train

Wow! what a great event is the folk train! (I speak from the perspective of one of the musicians...).

Dates and bands

Check out our events page for klezmer folk trains, and City Life magazine for the others.

Glossop Folk Train

A new Folk Train started in Summer 2003. It runs from Manchester to Glossop on Thursday evenings. Mostly similar to the Edale train but without the views of the hills! The venue is Glossop Labour Club.

Edale / Hathersage Folk Train

January 2005 - The Edale Folk Train has been discontinued - the train was just getting too busy and the commuters complained!

This event has changed to Hathersage on Saturday afternoons. The venue in Hathersage is the Little John Hotel

The photo for the above CD cover was taken on the Folk Train!

About the folk train

This event is promoted by the tourism people from High Peak in Derbyshire.

The deal is this - turn up for the train from Piccadilly Station in Manchester and buy a return ticket to Glossop or Hathersage (about 6 quid). Check our events page for dates and times.

We play on the train out (you can take a posh picnic to eat on the train if you are that way inclined) then there's a 5 minute walk to the pub where we play some more (about an hour), then we play again on the train back to Manchester.

Musicians who play generally travel free (...I suppose they might impose restrictions if a whole trainful of musicians arrived!)

The folk train runs once a month (maybe twice a month in Summer) and they have various different bands (I recommend also the Cajun ones..). We usually manage a klezmer train once or twice a year, so don't miss it.

The train usually packs out, and you are not guaranteed a good seat even if you arrive early - there is a bit of a scrum when the conductor lets the people on the train...

PS the Hathersage pub does food, but it is a bit of a rush...

Edale is so-oo pretty !:

If you haven't been to Edale before, I can recommend it highly, it is a very beautiful (dare I say spiritual?) place (see pics, below). We have had some stunning experiences there... playing outside in the snow, playing in outside in front of a lunar eclipse... not to mention inside in the pub.
